Skywall

Everything that shipped.

Every release, newest first.

1.0.0-beta.9

Added

  • Low Power Mode now pauses the wallpaper. Turn off Pause in Low Power Mode in Settings to keep it playing at half speed instead.

1.0.0-beta.8

Fixed

  • Switching desktops with a swipe no longer stops the wallpaper for a moment and makes it jerk.

1.0.0-beta.7

Changed

  • Hovering a card no longer shows a tooltip that repeats its name.
  • The wallpaper fades in when Skywall starts and after the Mac wakes or unlocks, and each loop of a film cross-fades into its start instead of jumping.

1.0.0-beta.6

Changed

  • Settings no longer links to the changelog.

1.0.0-beta.5

Fixed

  • The download window shown while Skywall updates itself is a sheet on the main window now. As a modal it could outlive a fast download and leave the update stuck.

1.0.0-beta.4

Fixed

  • The progress window could outlive a download that finished before it appeared, leaving the update stuck. Builds before this one have to be replaced by hand once.

1.0.0-beta.3

Fixed

  • The update installer checked the signature of what it downloaded with the wrong syntax and refused every update.

1.0.0-beta.2

Added

  • Films download three at a time instead of one after another, each with its own progress and its own cancel.
  • Skywall installs its own updates: it checks daily, and with your say-so downloads the new version, checks its signature and reopens. Settings can turn that off.

Changed

  • A click anywhere on a card now starts the download, cancels it, or sets the wallpaper. The little circle is only a sign of what is happening.
  • The catalog is parsed once and kept until macOS changes it, instead of being read again on every menu, scan and switch.
  • Previews are decoded at the size they are drawn and the cache is bounded, which cuts the app's memory sharply on a full library.
  • Films loop through the system's own looping player, so the seam at the end of a film is gone.

1.0.0-beta.1

Added

  • Check for Updates in Settings: it asks skywall.app what the current version is and offers the download page when they differ.
  • Skywall now arrives as a disk image you drag to Applications, signed and notarised.

0.3.0

Added

  • Settings window: open at login, links to the changelog, to the feedback form and to the site.
  • After you pick a film, a reminder offers to open the Wallpaper pane so the system's own wallpaper and screen saver can be set to match.

Changed

  • Skywall no longer rewrites the system's screen saver. Only System Settings can change it: the system restored its own choice within seconds of any other write.
  • Portrait variants of the System wallpapers, including the built-in Sonoma ones, are no longer listed.
  • Film previews come from skywall.app at higher resolution; the built-in previews stay as the fallback.

Fixed

  • Wallpaper names now come from the list the system ships today, so the built-in graphics read as macOS names them.

0.2.0

Added

  • System category: the built-in Mac, Golden Gate and Sonoma graphic wallpapers, light and dark variants, listed first.
  • Crossfade between wallpapers when switching.
  • Links of the form skywall://film/<id> open a film straight from the site.
  • Universal binary for Intel and arm64 Macs.

Changed

  • Sidebar section renamed to Categories.
  • Graphic wallpapers play stretched to the screen, as their metadata asks; films keep aspect fill.
  • New app icon and menu bar glyph.
  • Settings window credits Tigran Macintosh; the link no longer shows a focus ring.
  • App strings no longer name the platform vendor.

Fixed

  • Wallpaper names now prefer the system language before falling back to English.

0.1.0

Added

  • Main window: catalog of the built-in aerials (sidebar with sections, card grid, previews, favorites, download, delete to Trash).
  • Status bar menu: wallpaper selection, pause/resume, files folder, settings.
  • App icon (Icon Composer, Dark/Tinted support) and menu bar glyph.
  • Settings window (info page: version, author, link).
